Now that football season is over and basketball season is fast moving towards the play-offs a lot of people are glued to there T.V.watching to see what there favorite team is doing to get to the championship game. While those people are watching, there are many that are studying and preparing to become the the players or coaches in the spot light when they play for their respected championship games. There are some days that keep a fan, players, coaches, and management on the balls of their feet or dead in the middle of the hot seat.In the NFL you have senior bowls, pro-days combines and the draft. In college you have school vites, senior games and national singing day. In high school you have your seniors last games, incoming freshmen and the last day of camp. These are all things that will help build a winning program or destroy a program, but in Semi Pro ball it is a whole nother beast. Recruitment starts as soon as the season ends and can go all the way until opening day for some teams.
While the core of your team is getting ready for a new season, there is always a watchful eye on coaches and management to see what they are doing to make the team better. Now the same way collages have players that commit and de-commit we have the same problem and it is not one we can just fix with the wave of a wand. People get into Semi-Pro sports for alot of different reasons, and all the reasons effect the outcome of a team year in and year out. Many players should look at the man in the mirror before they look at the staffing or management. It is true that they all lean on each other to bring success to a team, while recruitment is very tuff and winning is a key component to the recipe of recruitment. It is sometimes hard to do when you have so many changes year after year. We know that signing day is always the biggest day for any team no matter the level of play, but we at the New York Syn believe it is not just the player its the right player. There are a few rules that we live by to help us make sure signing day is a good experience for the player and organization. Alot of people think Semi-Pro means "If I pay then I play" fact or fiction. Here at the New York Syn its all fiction. That is one of the most unaddressed rumor in the sport that is semi-pro and is one thing we address at signing day. #2. If a player has been on four teams in four years in the same league, then he or she is very talented or there is a problem. We also address that at signing day. If you have a great program and players want to be a part of that than that is a whole nother case and you should have a large turn out at camp even if they are from other teams in your league. #3. Find new talent. We try or best to bring new players into the fold and not fight over the same old..you know what i mean.. #4. Be competitive and impressive. Signing day is a day for old and new players to be put on the spot to see if they are in the right spot. These are just some of the rules that we live by to help put together a winning product. We at the Syn understand that players will come and go but our pedigree to winning won't. I was always told as a kid that a man is measured by his words and actions that came after, and we need to get back to being men. The world has changed and the word of man has changed with it, It started with words, then it became words and hand shakes, then words, hand shakes and pen and paper..Signing day for us includes words and no contracts because we know once a Syn always a Syn. SO you might not know the names on our roster but you will know us as a team.Signing day starts for the syn on Feb.27,2010 hope to see you there.
UNfinished Business
It's time to go to work for the New York Syn, after a strong come back season, the Syn fell short in the EFA play-offs of 2009. Losing a hard fought game to the Brooklyn Seminoles. On a rainy night the Syn seemed set to take the next step and make this team a house hold name. As the game came to an end you could see on the faces of the Syn players that is wasn't all left on the field, while shaking hands in the rain you could see the pain and frustration in the players and the coaches.
While the fans and supporters were happy to see the Syn back on the field in the 2009 season, it was not enough for the players to just have a complete season. "The goal is to win every game that we play and become a championship caliber team, and it seems that we still have some work to do" said running back Tyrone Green #5. "The team was built with a lot of new and young blood that helped us win games, but it's youth was exploited at pivotal times in the game" said coach Justin. The season ended on a sure tackle missed by veteran linebacker Keyshawn Jackson, which gave the Noles a 13-0 lead with minutes left in the game. While many people saw the ending of a year, coaches saw the start of a new world order; lead by coaches Steven Lynn, Justin Bynoe and Paster Pete. The Syn began to find there identity, with a ferocious defense leading the way, the Syn seems to be on a spiral upward towards the sky. The Syn had the youngest team in the league this season, but with the help of key veterans they were able to play the toughest schedule in the league and make the play-offs. Now that the holidays are over the players are getting back to work and it seems that the way the season ended left a bad taste in the mouth of the Syn players. We caught up with the team during a players only workout and spoke with some of the players, they all shared the same remorse about the game that ended the season, "I wish we could replay that one". "We couldn't keep making mistakes in that type of weather and expect to win the game, we put the ball on the floor and we weren't moving the chains", our defense was one of the best all year thanks to coach one hop aka coach Just. "Its up to us now, to want more"the players stated.
We talked to one of the teams well known vets to get a feel of what was on the minds of the Syn players. We caught up with Reco, #1 aka Hands after a work out and pick up game.
Q: How do you feel about the way the season ended?
A: I am a winner and we lost so i didn't feel good about that at all, but i feel we are ready to peak. We made the play-offs two out of three years, but that is not enough. We have some unfinished business and its time to reach the top.
Q: What would you like to change about that last game?
A: The score, and i would have like to see all the players put 100% on the line, because we cant go back in time its now or never.
Q: How do you feel about the Syn this season?
A: I like what I am seeing, with practice and commitment, we can do big things.
Q: What are you doing to get better and help the syn?
A: I am hitting the gym, staying active and getting to know my teammates.
Q: What would you like to tell the world about the Syn that they don't know?
A: That we are a force to be reckoned with ,they should watch out. 2010 is our year and there's nothing they can do to stop it.
Back to his workout he went. It was clear to see that the focus is on, while others might be getting ready for the NFL play-play-offs and making there arrangements for Super Bowl Sunday, the Syn are getting ready for there Super Bowl that awaits for them. Another player said "yeah there is nothing like watching your favorite team win a super bowl or even playing in one, but to win one, now that's what we want and until we get that, things will always be unfinished".
As it stands now, the Bandits have joined the Seminoles in jumping ship. We wish them well, the competition will be missed...
more to come, stay tuned.............
